Pleasant Oaks Gem & Mineral Club

of Dallas, Texas

May 2008 Special Auction

Two metal cabinets were donated to the Pleasant Oaks Gem and Mineral Club.  The Gentleman who donated the items used the cabinets to store his mineral collection.  Pleasant Oaks G&MC will auction these two cabinets at our May meeting.  The May meeting is on Thursday, 1 May 2008 at 7:30 PM.  Please come if you are interested in either or both of the two cabinets.

Both these cabinets are big and heavy.  I certainly will be unable to bring the "flat holder" cabinet to the meeting, I will try to bring the 27 drawer cabinet- but no guarantee.  If someone is really interested and wants to see them prior to the meeting, please contact me at don.shurtz@gmail.com and I will see if we can make arrangements.

The first cabinet is 30.5 inches wide, 13 inches deep, 37.5 inches tall and holds 27 drawers.  Each drawer is 9 by 12 by 3.25 inches.  The donor indicated he used this cabinet for thumbnail specimens – each drawer could hold 12 – 18 specimens single stacked!

The second cabinet is 36 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 48 inches tall.  It has 10 shelves plus the top.  The clearance on each shelve is 2.5 inches.  This is a very heavy cabinet - definitely a 2-person lift - it is a very structurally sound shelf system.  The donor indicated he used the shelves for storing flats of mineral specimens.  Each shelf will certainly hold multiple flats.

Both cabinets have some rust on the top, but I do not believe the rust impacts the structural integrity of the shelves.  The rust on the large cabinet I would classify as surface rust which could be easily cleaned off and repainted.  The rust on the smaller (27 drawer) cabinet looks like the result of a chemical spill - it would take a bit more effort to clean up.
